A CUP OF COLD WATER
Written May 28, 2019
“And whoever in the name of a disciple gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.” Matthew 10:42.
GOD loves those who love others. GOD rewards those who serve in His SON’s Name.
There are many ways to serve others and GOD loves them all, as long as they’re Scriptural, motivated by His Love, and you wanting it for the Glory of JESUS only.
Too many believe that they must be a Minister or someone of high importance to be used by GOD. Others believe the deed must be big or done with supernatural fervor. Yet, there will be many rewards given to GOD’s Children for obscure acts of love through a simple devotion to His SON.
The book of Revelation refers to the teaching of the Nicolaitans (Revelation 2:6 & 2:15). The churches were warned to hate it and to reject it. One of the doctrines adhered to by this heresy was that of the separation of clergy and laity. This emphasized the superiority of those in Ministry compared to those who had no office of importance.
JESUS proclaimed in Matthew 9:37, 38:
Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”
Many believe that the ‘workers’ mean Ministers. No . . . it refers to all Christians!
“And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11-13.
The leadership of the church is called to both lead and to equip all believers for ministry.
On Pentecost the prophecy of Joel was fulfilled.
17 ‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams; 18 Even on My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit And they shall prophesy.” Acts 2:17,18.
The young and the old, the rich and the poor, and men and women were all empowered for GOD’s service; And not just the Apostles but all that were present.
GOD’s leadership was called to do, to teach, to train others, and to multiply through them. Respect for those in authority was important but they were not to be praised as champions and experts. When the HOLY SPIRIT moves through the multitudes JESUS receives Glory; not man or the organization of men.
The harvest truly is great and can only be reached through mass evangelism accompanied by signs and
wonders of the HOLY SPIRIT. Even mega churches, famous evangelists, and massive organizations of man cannot accomplish the task of reaching all the world for CHRIST.
THE DIVERSITY OF THE MASSES
As Christians we have certain things in common – the same Gospel the same SPIRIT, the same Bible, and the same Commission.
“And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20.
Yet, the Body of CHRIST is diverse. Our dreams, our personalities, backgrounds, abilities, likes & dislikes, and opportunities differ; with no two of us being the same.
We all begin from the same place – at the foot of the cross and outside the empty tomb. However, GOD sent the HOLY SPIRIT to each believer in order to accomplish a specific task in His Kingdom work. These tasks may be judged by man as big or small. Yet, each one is important to GOD and that’s what’s important.
As Christians we are all to be salt in the earth.
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.” Matthew 5:13.
This is not a suggestion from JESUS, but a command. But why salt? There are multiple reasons.
Salt served as a tool for preservation of food. Thus, we are to preserve the Truth of GOD’s Word upon the earth.
In Leviticus 2:13 it was a requirement that all grain offerings by the Israelites must contain salt. We must preserve the message of the Cross.
The Greeks considered salt to be divine. The Salt of GOD is Divine through the Gospel.
The Roman soldiers received their pay in salt. Our pay is more of Him for the battle that He’s called us to do.
The whiteness of salt represents purity and our call to live righteously before others.
The flavor of salt tells us to bring the Flavor of GOD into the world.
Salt may sting as it reproves the world. Yet, it can bring healing to open wounds.
Furthermore, salt can bring a thirst for the one true GOD.
Freshly caught fish were preserved by salt. Thus, new believers need salt to prevent the corruption and decay from the world.
Warning – contaminated salt becomes poisonous and corrosive. It can’t even be used as fertilizer. It has to be thrown on the side of the road. Therefore, don’t spoil your work in GOD’s Kingdom.
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 6:14-16 NIV.
GOD’s Light in us exposes the world for what it is.
19 “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.” John 3:19-21.
The Light in us is magnified as fervor for JESUS burns greater and greater within us.
Salt preserves GOD’s Kingdom, while Light expands it.
The Light is not to Pronounce the no’s, but the yes’; which are the good works of CHRIST through us.
RAYS OF LIGHT
Light is made up of a rainbow or colors. However, the great majority of light’s rays cannot be seen with our eyes. Thus, the mass of GOD’s Light goes unnoticed by others; but is always noticed and someday will be rewarded by GOD.
GOD shines through the commitment and devotion to CHRIST of some. Others display JESUS’ Heart through Service in His Name. Hidden Rays of Light are manifested through Hidden prayer and fastings. There are those who give in secret to promote His Kingdom and to help the poor. Some evangelize while others disciple believers. Administration and the gift of helps are critical, but often overlooked by the Church.
Each Christian has a theme that GOD has placed in them to fulfill His Purpose. No two Pastors, Churches or ministries are the same.
Among us, the young people usually supply the zeal, the middle-aged carry the load, and the elderly have the wisdom,
Each generation ushers in new ways to present the same light. GOD’s Heart can beam through the differences in a male or female, the young and the old, the rich and the poor, and the educated and uneducated. Every culture has the potential to allow the unity of GOD to shine forth in their music and traditions.
I’ve witnessed the Glory of CHRIST shine forth in miracles granted and in strength to withstand adversity. I’ve seen the HOLY SPIRIT move spontaneously, and yet, seen those sustained through grueling tribulations.
There’s the simplicity of the Gospel and there’s the depth of GOD’s WORD. There are believers standing together, which pleases GOD. But there’s also the times, when we must soar like an eagle . . . alone.
There’s a multitude of colors in JESUS, which are displayed in a multitude of ways through GOD’s Church. All to His GLORY!!
Now let’s go back to the original Scripture in this newsletter.
Giving a cup of cold water can be accomplished in a variety of ways. Therefore, our day should be filled with many ways to bless others in the little things and in the big. They’ll all be rewarded if done with the Heart of CHRIST.
As we give, the recipients may vary in their reception to our gift. They may love you for it and praise GOD! However, they may reject it, pour it on the ground, or spit it in your face. The key is to do it. No matter the response the reward is yours.
Do you feel small and unimportant? Do you strive for greatness but fail? Do your abilities and efforts go unnoticed?
Perhaps you’ve been persecuted, even by Christians for trying to do the right thing. Remember, the Prophets were rejected, judged, and hated.
Maybe, your life seems wasted. I have good news for you. Begin to fill your day with service unto the LORD. Do it for HIS Glory. Present it in His Love. Ask the HOLY SPIRIT to direct and empower your day. Let each encounter with another be an avenue of GOD’s Light. May each task be an honor to be done for His Kingdom and not the world’s approval.
Your rewards will increase, but more important . . . let it be an act of love for your GOD and toward those that He Loves.
A day of praise will bring you joy. A time of service can bring fulfillment. Others may not notice. They may not appreciate. They may even criticize,
But GOD knows and you’ll be rewarded . . . eternally rewarded.
